In all variations of softball, the equipment is basically the same, even if we are talking about slow pitch softball equipment, or if we are talking about the other disciplines of softball. The slowpitch softball equipment includes a ball, a bat, gloves, uniforms and protective gear. The protective equipment is mandatory for fast pitch players and in some cases for slow pitch players (only in rare cases).
In slow pitch softball international competitions, the ball must have an 11 inch circumference and a weight of 5.875 oz to 6.125 oz. Generally, in slow pitch, the ball used is a 12 inch circumference ball. Usually, the ball is covered in white or yellow leather with two pieces sewn together with red thread even though other coverings are allowed. However, the white balls are more common in slow pitch. The core of the ball can be made of a polyurethane mixture or a mixture of cork and rubber or other types of material. The bat is normally made out of wood, metal or composite materials. Softball gloves are larger than baseball gloves and they may be worn by all players since 2007 after the new set of regulations was approved by the ASA. Gloves are made of leather or a similar material and it is required that they have a different color than the ball. The first baseman can wear mitts with an extra padding and no fingers.
An important item of the softball equipment is the uniform. The uniform is the distinctive piece of equipment of a team and it includes a cap, visor, a shirt with numbers printed on the back and (optional) the player’s name, an undershirt, sliding undershorts, socks and shorts or pants. For each item of clothing, there are standards set. Wearing jewelry is not allowed during any kind of softball game. The players must wear shoes which are equipped with cleats or spikes (though in slow pitch softball metal spikes are not permitted). In slow pitch, helmets are mandatory only for youth batters and they are optional for adult batters. The catcher must wear a mask or helmet as well, rule which is mandatory for youth players and recommended for adults.
Anyhow, in slow pitch there is no official requirement to wear a helmet. The players may wear a face mask or face guard as long as they are not damaged. As a part of the protective gear, players are recommended to wear sliding pants to protect their legs when they slide into the bases. Slow pitch softball equipment is more or less the same as any other version of softball equipment, but considering the reduced speed of the game, most of the protective gears are not mandatory for slow pitch softball players, with the exeption of youth levels.
